“Non-toxic”, “chemical-free” and “eco-friendly” appear on everything from cots and changing tables to mattresses and nursery chairs. But what do these claims actually mean. And how do you know whether you're buying a genuinely well-made piece of furniture or simply paying more for a reassuring label?
We’ve put together a little guide to make things a little simpler.
Most importantly, this isn't about telling you that every conventional piece of furniture is dangerous or that you need to spend thousands creating a “perfect” nursery. It's about knowing what to look for and asking the right questions before you buy.
Here's the bit that often gets left out: “non-toxic” isn't a regulated definition for furniture.
Neither “chemical-free” nor “eco-friendly” has a single legal definition that tells you exactly what a product must contain. That means brands can use these terms in different ways, and it can be difficult for parents to know what they're actually getting.
Rather than looking for one magic label, it's more useful to break nursery furniture down into four parts:
These details tell you far more than a large “non-toxic” badge on a product page.
For example, a cot might have a solid wood frame but an MDF mattress base. A wooden changing table might be finished with a solvent-based lacquer. A mattress cover described as “waterproof” might use a synthetic coating.
None of this automatically means a product is unsafe. It simply means the material specification is worth looking at.
The aim isn't to create a nursery containing absolutely no chemicals — that's impossible. The more realistic goal is to choose well-made furniture, understand what's in it and reduce unnecessary exposure where you reasonably can.
There isn't one perfect material for every nursery. Budget, durability, design and availability all play a part.

Solid hardwoods such as beech, oak, birch, maple, poplar and ash are popular choices for wooden nursery furniture because they're durable and relatively straightforward materials.
Certifications can also provide useful information. FSC certification, for example, relates to responsible forestry rather than whether a piece of furniture is “non-toxic”, so it's important to understand what a certification actually covers rather than treating every logo as a general safety guarantee.
For soft furnishings and mattresses, materials such as GOTS-certified organic cotton, wool, coconut coir and natural latex can be useful options if you're trying to reduce synthetic materials. On the other side, MDF, particleboard and other engineered woods deserve a little more attention because they're manufactured using binding resins. Some of these resins contain formaldehyde, which can be released into indoor air.
That doesn't mean MDF furniture is automatically dangerous. Compliant products are subject to emissions requirements, and exposure decreases significantly as a product ages.
In other words, you don't need to panic if your changing table contains some MDF. Solid wood is simply a straightforward choice if reducing engineered materials is a priority.
This is one of the easiest things to miss when buying a cot.
A cot can have a beautiful solid wood frame while the mattress support underneath is made from MDF or another engineered board.
That's worth checking because the mattress base sits directly underneath where your baby sleeps.
When you're looking at a cot or cot bed, don't just ask:
“Is this made from solid wood?”
Ask:
“What is the mattress support base made from?”
Look for the material specification specifically. If the answer isn't listed, ask the manufacturer.
A solid wood mattress base can also have a practical advantage. It's less likely to sag over time than some engineered boards, although construction and support spacing matter too.
The frame isn't the whole story. Check the part your baby's mattress actually sits on.
Yes, compliant MDF furniture can be used safely in a nursery. But solid wood may be preferable if reducing formaldehyde emissions is a priority.
MDF is made by breaking wood down into fibres and bonding those fibres together with resins. Some MDF products use formaldehyde-based resins, and formaldehyde can be released into the air, particularly when furniture is new.
The good news is that emissions are highest when the product is new and generally decrease over time. UK and European rules also set limits for formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels.
So the reality is considerably less dramatic than some online advice suggests.
If you're buying a chest of drawers made partly from MDF, that doesn't automatically make it an unsafe choice. A compliant, well-made piece that's been allowed to air out can be a perfectly reasonable option.
If your budget allows, you may still prefer solid wood for a cot, cot bed or furniture within easy reach of a baby. But there's no need to treat every piece of engineered wood as an emergency.
One practical point matters more than many parents realise: timing.
If you're buying MDF furniture, order it early enough to assemble and ventilate it well before your baby arrives.
The material underneath the surface isn't the only thing worth checking.
Paints, oils, stains, varnishes and adhesives can all contribute to what a piece of furniture releases into the air.
Plant-based oils such as linseed, hemp and tung oil are popular natural finishes. They're minimally processed and can have relatively low VOC emissions compared with some conventional coatings.
The important word is cured. An oil finish shouldn't be considered ready simply because the furniture feels dry. Follow the manufacturer's curing instructions and give the product plenty of time before it's used by a baby.
This is where things get slightly counterintuitive.
A water-based stain will generally have fewer solvent-related emissions than an oil-based stain because many oil-based products use solvent carriers.
If you're comparing two otherwise similar finishes, asking whether they're water-based or solvent-based is a useful question.
Adhesives are another part of the equation, particularly in engineered wood and furniture with multiple components.
Once properly cured, adhesives are generally less relevant to day-to-day hand or mouth contact than the exposed surface of a cot rail. Still, it's reasonable to ask what type is used.
Water-based adhesives can be a useful option, and a manufacturer's willingness to tell you exactly what they use is often reassuring in itself.
This matters particularly in a nursery because babies spend a lot of time close to their furniture. A baby can spend 12–16 hours a day sleeping or resting in a cot, with their face only inches from the surrounding surfaces.
That's a very different situation from a dining table that you sit at for an hour or two.
GREENGUARD Gold is one of the certifications you'll often see mentioned when researching lower-emission furniture.
It can be useful, but it's important to understand exactly what it means.

That makes it useful if your main concern is what a piece of furniture releases into the air.
But GREENGUARD Gold isn't a certificate saying that every material used in a product is free from every chemical of concern.
It primarily deals with chemical emissions. That means it doesn't automatically tell you whether a product contains substances that don't readily evaporate into the air.
For example, certification doesn't necessarily answer questions about:
This is why certification should be viewed as one useful piece of information rather than the whole answer.
A GREENGUARD Gold-certified piece of furniture can offer meaningful reassurance around indoor-air emissions, but it's still worth looking at the actual material specification.
The same applies to mattresses and mattress covers. Be cautious around vague claims such as “waterproof” or “stain-resistant”. Ask how those properties are achieved, particularly if you're trying to minimise PFAS and other unnecessary treatments.
The best brands should be able to tell you both what their certification covers and what it doesn't.
There's a common assumption that creating a low-toxin nursery means buying premium furniture from specialist eco brands.
It doesn't.
Price isn't a reliable measure of chemical safety. You can spend a lot on a piece of “eco” furniture and still find that it has a noticeable chemical smell when you open the box.
One of the simplest options can actually be unfinished solid wood.
There's no stain, paint or lacquer to assess, because there isn't one. If you want to change the colour or add protection, you can choose a suitable finish yourself.
Mainstream furniture retailers also sell solid wood pieces alongside MDF and engineered-wood ranges. You don't necessarily need to shop exclusively with a specialist “non-toxic” brand.
Instead, look at the specification for each individual product.
And if you're comfortable buying second-hand, used furniture can be another option. You avoid much of the initial off-gassing period and can often find solid wood pieces for considerably less than buying new.
If VOC emissions are a particular concern, look for zero-VOC claims rather than assuming “low-VOC” means the same thing. They aren't interchangeable terms.
The important thing is not how expensive the furniture looks. It's whether you know what you're actually buying.
Even if you choose a low-emission piece of furniture, when you bring it into your home matters.
New furniture tends to release the highest levels of VOCs during the first weeks after manufacture. Those emissions generally decrease over time.
So rather than waiting until the nursery is almost finished, try to give new furniture some breathing room.
If possible:
Even relatively short periods of ventilation can reduce indoor VOC concentrations.
This is particularly important with made-to-order nursery furniture. Some pieces can have lead times of several months, and payment may be required well before delivery.
Check the lead time before ordering rather than discovering it when you're already well into preparing the nursery.

Buying earlier gives you more time to let new furniture air out.
You don't always have to spend more. Sometimes you just need to plan ahead.

The safety basics that have nothing to do with chemicals
A nursery can have the most carefully chosen materials in the world and still be unsafe if the furniture isn't used properly.
Chemical exposure is only one part of the picture.
Keep these basics in mind:

The more useful approach is to understand what you're buying.
Look at the wood. Check the finish. Ask about adhesives. Don't forget the mattress support base. Understand what certifications actually test for rather than assuming a logo means everything is covered.
And remember that non-toxic nursery furniture doesn't have to mean expensive nursery furniture.
Solid wood, unfinished pieces and well-chosen second-hand furniture can all be sensible options. If you do buy something new, giving it time to air before your baby arrives can be just as practical as choosing a more expensive alternative.
